Golf Rules Made Easy

Golf Rules Made Easy

In this post, we’re going to explore the rules of golf, one of the greatest games ever created. You’re about to learn the interesting history of golf, why people play golf, the object of golf and how the score is kept.

HISTORY OF GOLF

I bet that you are unfamiliar with the history of golf. As early as the 15th century, a game similar to golf was played in Scotland with a club made of a bent tree branch and a small leather bag stuffed with feathers for a ball. The game as we know it today originated in St. Andrews, Scotland in 1744.

The first official golf course in America was built in 1888 in Yonkers, New York, called “The St. Andrews Golf Club.” The course originally had three holes, then expanded to six holes, nine holes and finally eighteen holes. Golf continued to grow in popularity in America.

However, by the turn of the century, the game was played primarily by wealthy people who had time and money to dedicate to the game. In 1913, a 20-year-old caddie, Francis Ouimet, stunned the nation when he became the first American to win the U.S. Open at “The Country Club,” in his hometown of Brookline, Massachusetts.

From that day on, the game of golf has become increasingly popular in America. Today, there are over 24 million golfers in the United States.

GOLF: THE GAME OF A LIFETIME

Golf is the most widely played game in the world. Whether you are male or female, and regardless of your age, you can enjoy the great game of golf. Children play with adults, men and women play together, and all may enjoy the game equally. Unlike many other sports, you do not need special athletic ability to enjoy the game.

Golf offers a wide variety of benefits. The game is played outside on some of the most beautiful pieces of land throughout the world. Golf can be a form of exercise. Walking 18 holes is equivalent to walking 5 miles.

The game is a great family activity, for children, parents and grandparents. Businesses throughout the world use the game to promote their companies. Organizations use golf outings to raise money for charities. Some regions use golf as a major attraction for their tourism, providing millions or even billions of dollars to their economy.

Many people use golf for relaxation, to get away from their everyday pressures and to enjoy the atmosphere the game offers. The game builds relationships with friends, family and business associates. Golf teaches you to deal with adversity.

To excel at the game, you will learn discipline, dedication and patience. There are a lot of golf rules and regulations. But most of all, the game is fun!

OBJECT OF THE GAME

The game of golf is played outdoors, on an area of land that is referred to as a golf course. Each course normally consists of 9 or 18 holes. When you play 9 or 18 holes, you are playing a round of golf. The object of each hole is to hit the golf ball into a cup.

The starting point of each hole is the teeing ground. The finishing point is the cup, located on the putting green. Any attempt to hit the golf ball, whether successful or unsuccessful is considered a stroke. When playing, golf clubs are used to hit the golf ball.

These clubs vary in length and design, and are referred to as woods, irons, or putters. The object of the game is to play all  9 or 18 holes, taking as few strokes as possible to get your ball from the teeing ground into the cup on each hole.

DETERMINING YOUR SCORE

Every hole on a golf course is assigned a par of either three, four, or five. The par is based on the length of the hole which is measured in yards. As shown in below, the guideline used to determine par is different for men and women.

Par is the number of strokes in which you try to complete each hole. It is a mark of excellence for playing the hole. When playing the game, you compare your strokes with par. Only the finest golfers play golf at or below par. When you first start playing, do not expect to score near par. For instance, on a par-4, it may be common for you to take eight to ten strokes.

On a par-S, your goal is to get from the tee onto the putting green in one stroke. On a par-4, your goal is two strokes, and on a par-5, your goal is three strokes. Once on the green your goal is to putt the ball into the hole in two strokes or less.

Your ability as a golfer is determined by the number of strokes it takes you to play each hole. When starting the game, do not focus too much attention on your score.

Simply get used to playing the game and being on the golf course. Regardless of whether you keep score or not, always get a scorecard from the golf shop before starting your round of golf. The scorecard is a helpful aid.

First, scorecards show the length and par of each hole. Second, they often show a drawing or layout of each hole identifying the location of rivers, ponds, bunkers, etc. Third, if you are playing in a competition using handicaps, the handicap to be used for each hole is shown on the scorecard (discussed later).

When looking at the scorecard, people often ask what the terms out and in mean. Out is where you put your total score for the first nine holes. In is where you put your total score for the second nine holes. This assumes you started on hole number one. To improve your golf score, check out our golf swing tips.

The terms originated with the links style courses in Scotland that follow the seaside or bay. It is common for the first nine holes to go out away from the clubhouse, along the shoreline. The second nine holes are adjacent to the first nine, but go back in toward the clubhouse.

SCORING TERMS

The following are terms commonly used to refer to your score on each hole. An ace or hole-in-one refers to getting your ball in the hole in one stroke and is extremely rare. Also rare is a double eagle which is three strokes under par.

An eagle is two under par, while a birdie is one under par. It is more common to have scores over par. For instance, a bogey is one over par, a double bogey is two over par, a triple bogey is three over par, and a quadruple bogey is four over par.

HANDICAP

A handicap is a number assigned to a golfer, based on the scores he or she normally shoots. Handicaps are used so golfers of different abilities can compete against each other. A person is not required to have a handicap in order to play golf, however, some golf tournaments require that you have an established handicap to participate.

If you become interested in obtaining a handicap it is best to contact a local golf course that has a handicap service.

So those are the rules of golf. In the next section, we’ll talk about the layout of the golf course!

How to Hit a Golf Ball With Irons

Hello my name is Conan Elliot and I’m Director of Instruction to your Camas Meadows Golf Club course in Camas Washington. Today we’re going to talk about how to hit a golf ball with irons.

The materials we need for this is naturally a golf ball and an iron club. Well, it’s a little bit different with woods for sure. We want the bottom of the golf club to actually work down on the ground. We want to strike the ground with the bottom of the club. People try to hit down and get the edge on to the ground under the ball.

We don’t. We want the golf club to work of its bottom. The angle of the club here is the same as the facing. The club works off its bottom when it hits the ground then the angle will be correct.

The key is to find the dirt as the great Ben Hogan said, “The answer is in the dirt” so that’s what we want to do. We want to let the club work in the dirt. Let the bottom of the club strike the ground. Ball place becomes very important here. We get the ball too far forward in our stance toward our left foot.

Then I’m going to catch the ground more back here. If I get the ball too far back, what usually happens is I have to throw my hands or throw the club down to get it down in time to strike it. What I actually want is the ball just about in the center or maybe one golf ball wide to the left in the center of my stance. From that point on all I got to do is let my hands stay quiet and cock, and let the club tap down into the ball.

As long as the club works down and catches the ground, the golf ball comes up into the air. The key is I don’t try to lift my ball in the air. I’m not the lifter in the golf swing. I’m the swinger of the golf club. The golf club is the lifter. As long as the bottom of the golf club strikes the ground first then the angle will be correct the ball will roll up and go off in the angle of the club.

The club is the lifter, I’m the swinger. When I become the lifter, I usually tap my golf ball. Keep my hands quiet, keep the ball in the middle of my stance, and just let the club work off the ground. This is Conan Elliot and that’s how to use irons in the golf swing.

Golf’s Most Important Lesson

Hi! It’s Charlie King Director and Golf Instructor of Reynolds Golf Academy. I want to talk to you about something that we really focus on a lot here. I think this is the ultimate tip or idea that you need to know first of all that has gone through golf being someone of an unknown. That is the ability to hit the ball solidly in golf. I think it’s the biggest barrier to really enjoying this game.

The ability to where the ball seen on the ground and getting this golf club to come back to that exact spot. What happened over the year is there’s been a misconception out there. We missed, we look at the ball, we swing, and then we try to hit the ball. When we missed it, our friends say “hey you looked up”, “you took after the ball”, “and you lifted your head!” What’s happening is that’s what you think happen. Now what you do, you focus on keeping your head down better and longer. The problem is that’s not what happened, that’s not what’s causing the problem.

The problem is instinctively we’re trying to lift the ball up into the air. The ball seen in the ground, and also gets up in the air, and there’s this instinct that makes me do that with my wrist. I catch the ball on the way up like that. Instead, what we’re going to do is realize that golf is more of an impacting type game. It’s a smack pack game. Put your left hand out like this, take your right hand and smack against your left hand. That’s the idea and the feeling that you want to have with impact. As you come to hit the golf ball, you want your hands out in front like that. Most of you heard that that you should hit slightly down on the ball. The drill that I want you to have here is the line drill.

We take two balls, put them down on the ground and this creates an imaginary line on the ground. Now with this imaginary line, we got to be able to hit and take a divot on or pas that line. We go back, and take a little bit of a divot. Go back and take a little bit of a divot. If you look at my hands they’re not flipping. We put the ball in here and now you got to be able to hit the shot.

You hit the ball and take a divot and we’ll just do bigger and bigger versions for the shot. This idea when put into practice makes all the difference in the world. It will get rid of your shots where you hit behind it. It will get of the shots that you top. It really gets your golf game to a point where you can start to enjoy it. The most frustrating thing about golf is not being to hit the ball solid.

For more information like this, Reynolds Golf Acadmy.com and make sure if you have any friends that ever told you, “hey I’ve look up”, “I lifted my head”, you need to send this to them. They need to know about this.

Next online golf lesson: Mastering the Pitch Shot

Mastering The Pitch Shot in Golf

The pitch shot is made when the player is a short distance from the green. The ball has only a short distance to roll in proportion to the distance it has to fly. Again Jonathan will first find the landing position on the green. A few meters before the hole. Taking his address position on the direct of this landing point, he again narrows his stance. Although not as much as he did when chipping. He moves the left foot 6cm back and the right foot 3cm forward while slipping his shoulders parallel to the target line so creating the x-factor.

In this shot his weight approximately 60% on its left leg and 40% on the right. The weight will transfer normally during the shot. When pitching the ball, I need a lot of club head speed to create a spin. I’ll be using the wrist again to create a catapult effect.. Although the swing is the same with my normal swing, I do hinge the wrist quicker when pitching than in the normal swing. He controls the direction with his shoulders and the distance with the length of the temple of his back swing. With the chip shot the follow through will be proportionate to the back swing land.

As the more back swing he makes, the more energy the club will have after impact. When pitching the ball, be careful not to hold the club too tightly, especially in the down swing. After so abruptly hinging the wrist, there is often tension on the wrist in the down swing. In extreme cases it will cause you to shank the ball, a shot where the ball hits the base of the shaft instead of the club face. Then it goes directly right.

How To Hit Your Drives 350+ Yards

Okay the next form we’re going to talk about is the X factor and body separation. What Nyle is going to demonstrate for you here is how to get your shoulders internal a lot more than your hip rotation would be in your golf swing. This is really critical because this helps you set yourself up from the down swing in terms of being out to store your power and come from the inside and lay to get the extra distance as your approaching the golf ball.
I’m giving you Nyle to set up for you to see it.

We’re just going to talk a little bit of that. How you need to turn and the way you need to turn. Nyle sets up the golf ball here. He’s going to wind up into his right side and as we talk about just a few minutes ago. We talked about how he’s going to hold his left knee in place. He’s going to get his left shoulder back more behind this point here.

This helps him with getting tremendous coil and flexibility his needed to get into his right side. It’s going to help him store this pyramid down swing. Now you know when you feel that motion right there. What do you feel is going to happen when you start back down from that position?

What I feel is that when I’m going back actually, what I try to feel is my hips. I want my hips to move slightly. You see a lot of players when they take the club back, their hips move with their shoulder. What I’m trying to feel is when I’m taking the club back I’m trying to move my hips a little bit, trying to get deep with the left shoulder. I’m trying to get my shoulder to kind of get that x-factor like we’re talking about.

I really want my shoulder to turn when I start my hip turn. Literally it allows the club to fall into place. Allows me to come in an inside path, and really create that inside move where I try to hit the inside part the golf ball. Rotate those forms, get that angular moment I’m going. I create that kind of moment coming through that ball and I’m able to rotate those forms in really compress golf ball.

That’s really critical when you have the right sequence. If you can get those shoulders to turn back further and increase your distance on a down swing.

5 Minute Lessons – How to Cure a Slice

Hi! I’m Bill Kennedy from Golf Vacation Magazine’s Travel Concierge today with PGA pro Greg Anderson of the Greg Anderson Golf Academy at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park CA. 90% of the golfers had a slice golf ball.

In my case there’s a right stance for the ball to start off maybe a little left, fades back to the center. What I see there is I look at two things when I’m looking at the sliced golf ball shot. It’s the swing path and the club face position in relationship to the swing path. The slice is the swing path going outside in, to your target line with an open face. That’s the shot I see most common.

I was talking about the path, now I’m going to show you the path that I see quiet often. It’s the motion that goes back here and when I step the club properly, okay at the top. Then on the first move is very big maybe with the lower part of the body without the club coming through.

The club gets outside the line and when you’re making contact, the face is wide open. The odd thing about this type of golf swing is that the harder that you swing, the more spin you get, more negative spin you get, and actually the shorter the ball will fly.

Now what I want to do is give you a drill of this pretty simple drill. It gets into the inside path and gives you a little bit of feeling for trying to eliminate the slice shot. What I like to do, here’s my normal stance. Everything is square, my shoulder, my hips, and my feet.

What I would do, I’ll try to get a better position, is take my stance severely close. Take the right foot back, again I’m doing this I’m moving this back severely. As I take my turn, I’m in a very good position here again. Now because the way I sort of lock it up on the left side. I cannot get my body weight in front of it. Now what I’m doing is I’m allowing my club head to come down through without any energy on my let side. That keeps me in the good path and that’s actually a lot easier to correct the slice position coming through.

Here’s another good drill to take away the slice motion of the golf ball.  I like to hold this thing about a baseball level and I like to rotate. Gets the golf swing moving on this plane and it does lower my back angle.

Try to get and go the same way. What I see a lot of times when people are slicing the golf ball, if their doing the baseball swing, baseball rotation they might release their hands about right there. What I try to do is get them to do a little bit sooner where they can here the whip of the shaft which is about ball level. I find that very useful in curing the slice.

Here’s another good drill to cure the slice. Here’s my normal set up position. Getting here, everything square, shoulders, fit. What I will do is I just take my back to the target, rolling up my stance, and take my right foot.

Move it back almost level with my left foot along this line. My back is to the target, when I’m doing this, I make a wonderful turn. My club is in a wonderful position. I can throw here and release the club. That’s a very good way to stop from slicing the golf ball. Good drill.

Learn Your Perfect Back Swing

I’m Mike Adams Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher. There’s a lot of confusion out there as to what the perfect length the box way is. Well the answer is it depends. Each of has has different flexibility, so each of us is going to swing the club to different lengths. We all think that parallel is perfect and down the line. To help me with today’s tip, Justine why don’t you go ahead and swing the club to the top of your back swing. Get the club all the way to parallel and down the line.

In order for Justine to do that, he have to collapse his left leg. His wave his left forward except he collapsed his left arm. None of these are beneficial for a good golf swing. What I need to do is find what is perfect for Justine. Justine go ahead and I will have you kneel for me. Now when he’s kneeling, what he’s able to do is make a full arm swing, full shoulder turn, and full hip turn.

Now go ahead and swing to the top of your back swing. This would be a maximum length of swing for Justine. He’s got a full hip turn, full shoulder turn, and full arm swing. A lot of people look at us and say that’s laid off. In reality it’s not. The shaft and the shoulders will always always cross the tee at the top.

I’ll make a less than full turn, it will appear to be laid up but they will still be crossing tee. I return, and put it down the line. The bigger the line return, will it appear to be across the line. The shaft of the golf club and the shoulders will always be at right angles. It’s a lot of confusion. People think that this is laid off.

In reality this is an ideal position. This is where Justine needed to be. Justine go ahead and stand up. Now Justine what I want you to do is swing from the top of your back swing and get the same feeling that you have while you’re kneeling. I want you to stabilize your lower body and make sure the left arm swings across the chest. Now swing it back, perfect.  As you can see Justine is on ideal perfect position. The shaft and the shoulders were at 90 degrees to each other. They’re crossing the tee at the top which is what we want every single time.

You don’t have to be parallel because you’ll be swinging perfect. Find your ideal position, get down on your knees, and swing the club back. Once you find your ranger motion and your ideal back swing position. That is where you need to have it with your golf shots. If you do that I guarantee you’ll hit the best golf shots your life.

Build Your Golf Swing in 5 Simple Steps

Hi! I’m Gayle Peterson, Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher. Hi! Gayle here and I’d like to help you build your golf swing from the ground up. After getting your good grip and good posture, and aim and alignment, we want to build a swing from small to large.

Every swing should look like it has a top and a finish, a continuation from the top and the finish with no anticipation of impact. Stage 1 and development, what I would like for you to do is get a lofted club, maybe a 9 or wedge, or an 8 iron. I’d like for you to start with stage 1.

Stage 1 would be a small swing with our feet really close together and a minimal amount of wrist-cock on the way back. Then we’re going to drag the handle of the club pass the ball so that adds impact. The shaft is going to be leaning forward. This will encourage the club to be swinging downward at the ball.

We’ll have the smash factor. You here about that all the time, we’ll smash the ball or squeeze it up against the turf. Stage 1 would be across the toe line. We’re going to drag the handle pass the ball with a low finish of the club head. You can see when I finish the left arm and the shaft look like a straight line. That’s absolutely perfect.

When I get to when I can make a difference with in front of the ball with stage 1, now I want to go with stage 2. I’m going to add another element for power. That will make my ball go a greater distance. Now I’ll add some bending my left wrist. My left wrist is actually hinges. You can see from that angle at the left arm in the shaft actually look like a right angle.

From this down the line view, I have a dowel at the end of this club. This looks like it’s pointing just slightly inside the golf ball. I draw a line through the ball, a target line. If this club swings on plain this dowel will be pointed slightly to the inside of that target line. When it gets to the end to the ball from there, I’m going to add another speed for this element.

The 3rd stage would be shoulder turn. That should load me into the inside of my right foot. What I’d like for you to do with stage 4 is follow through. The arms are going to rotate and the club is going to re-hinge on a follow through. Stage 5 would be a full swing.

The only thing I’ll have to add for the full swing would be a full body release to the finish. If my body keeps going, and my arms keep going, then it takes to scoop and flip out of it. That’s probably the number one cause of un-solid shot or miss hits, fat and thin shot. The sequence of the club here gets to the ball way too early. Again let’s go through the stages. Stage 1 would be a small swing with a minimal amount of wrist-cock and I’m just going to turn through and take a divot in front of the ball.

Now to add more power, I’m going to add a little bit more wrist-cock on the back swing. A little wider stance to support a little bigger swing and I’m going to swing it through stage 1. Let my left wrist-cock and again I’m finishing with my body turn towards the target and the club head below my hands.

This would be stage 3. Stage 3 I’m going to go through stage 1 and 2 with some wrist-cock. I’m going to add a little bit of shoulder turn. The power from my divot will give me more acceleration though the shot. It gives me more power and makes my golf ball go a little greater distance than the previous one. Here’s stage 3. I’m going to get the wrist-cock, and then I’m going to add the shoulder turn but still a low finish, punching the ball out on to the range.

Now we’re going to stage 4. Stage 4 has stage 1 with some wrist-cock and some shoulder turn. Now on the follow through after impact, my right arm is going to swivel over my left shaft. It’s going down the target line. Then the club is going to re-hinge so that the shaft points back at the target line, re-hinges on plain. Here we go stage 4. Stage 4 has a shoulder turn and a wrist-cock. Now I’ll release.

Here we go with stage 5. Stage 5 is a full swing finish. All I’m going to do is keep my body going to the finish. Here’s stage 5 just a little bit of wrist-cock, shoulder turn, and then a full body finish. Remember work from the ground up. Build your swing from the ground up. Go through stage 1 with minimal amount of wrist-cock and a low finish.

Go to stage to add some wrist-cock again with a low finish. Stage 3, add a little body and low finish. Stage 4, add a little bit more release and then to get to stage 5 just let your body go to a full swing finish all the way through the shot. Again build your swing from the ground up and if you have any problem with your game, come see us at beautiful see island.

The 3 Best Golf Swing Tips to Improve Your Game

The 3 Best golf Swing Tips

Welcome to our collection golf swing tips.

No matter how long you’ve been playing for, or who you’ve received instruction from, there is always room to improve your golf swing. When you start thinking that you are above learning, your golf game will stop improving. Unless you are already playing at the professional level, these golf swing tips will help your game if you take the time to follow and practice them.

Many players new to golf believe that the perfect golf swing simply depends on swinging your arms in a certain manner. When you start exploring even the most basic golf swing tips, you start to see that this isn’t true at all.

Golf Swing Tips #1: Wet Mop Drill

One of the best golf swing tips I’ve ever heard  that helps players find their perfect swing is this: practice with a wet mop.

The weight and length of the mop makes you to stay low and slow. As you take the mop back to the top of your backswing, you have to ensure that the wet ends of the mop stays behind your body. If for some reason it hangs over your head, you get soaked! The purpose of this wet mop drill is to

  1. Prevent you from lifting the club up too early in the takeaway and
  2. Help you round out your backswing

Golf Swing Tips #2: Position Yourself in the Proper Plane

There are several aspects of a great golf swing. The actual movement of the arm and direction of the swing are just two small pieces. One of the most valuable golf swing tips is to understand how to position yourself in the proper plane.

As you go through your entire golf swing, your body should be aligned in an almost horizontal plane. This forces you to be at a 90 degree angle, which allows you to apply enough power into your drive, allowing you to hit the ball farther down the green.

This sounds simple, but is actually one of the most fundamental golf swing tips, that all golf players, no matter their experience level, should revisit from time to time to make sure they are actually implementing it.

Golf Swing Tips #3: Move Into Your Golf Swing

Another of the best golf swing tips that will improve your drive distance is make sure you are actually moving into your golf swing. Relax your arm and should so your golf swing happens in a single, fluid motion. There should be absolutely no tension or jerkiness.

At first, it may feel awkward and the motion will not feel smooth at all. But keep practicing until your golf swing feels completely natural. If you watch a professional golf player, you’ll notice how smooth his or her entire golf swing is. It’s important to master all the golf swing basics and set a good foundation instead of forming sloppy habits.

Bonus Tip: Play With the Right Ball

Lastly, this is not a golf swing tip, but a general golf tip. Make sure you’re playing the right ball. Notice how the best golf players all over the world are playing the best golf balls. However, amateur golf players do the exact opposite.

Mid to high handicap golf players should think about using golf balls built for distance and reducing spin. These two things will help you hit straighter and further. Distance balls do not feel so heavy and some are extremely soft for increased feel and performance.

Golf Swing Basics

Golf Swing Basics

First learning the golf swing basics is not an easy task for a new golfer. I can tell you this from experience, as when I first started, I was having some real problems getting to grips with things. I had lessons from PGA golfers, I practiced almost every day, yet I was getting nowhere.

Now that I can safely say I have reached a fairly high level in golf at a handicap of 5, and I am going to tell you my experience, and how I got to where I am today.

When I first started, I really did love golf, but slowly and slowly I was falling away from the game simply because I wasn’t getting anywhere, and almost everyone I played with was much better than me. It was very disheartening, and I felt I had to do something. This something had to be different, because I had already been for golf lessons which were getting me nowhere.

An Easy Solution to Mastering Golf Swing Basics

It wasn’t until a friend of mine recommended me to a kind of golf guide available on your computer that I really started to get off the ground in golf, and began to really get to grips with the golf swing basics. This golf guide which I was led to was called The Simple Golf Swing. To be honest, before I purchased it I really thought nothing of it, and thought it would be useless. This was were I was wrong.

Sample Video Clip from Simple Golf Swing:

You are probably thinking “nothing is as good as getting a one to one lesson”. Maybe that is true for some people, but I certainly have a different view after using this guide. It has video guides, step by step guides, exercises, and so much more. I haven’t even finished using the guide yet there is so much information, golf swing tips, and many more! Even now, at the handicap of 5 I still use the guide on a day to day basis. It covers everything from the bare basics of the golf swing, to the more advanced, and specific fundamentals of a good golf swing.

Whether you are completely new to golf, or a more expert player, this guide can help you. It certainly helped me, and in my opinion is better than getting a one to one golf lesson due to the fact you only get a limited amount of time with the person.
